Utstilling: From Seed to Sim

Hvordan kan planter og plantekunnskap medvirke til å gjenopprette naturskader? I prosjektet From Seed to Sim, utforsker kunstner Irene Rasmussen hvordan såkalte “superplanter” tar opp i seg tungmetaller og miljøgifter og på den måten kan bidra til å rense forurenset jord. 

I 2021 etablerte Rasmussen “Sepverkhagen” i Kirkenes, like nedenfor seperasjonsverket til det lokale gruveselskapet. 400 “superplanter”, vekster av sennep og solsikker, ble plantet på dugnad med barnehager og frivillige. Målet var å se hvor mye metaller plantene kunne trekke opp fra grunnen i det jernholdige sjødeponiet. 

I utstillingen “From Seed to Sim” på Terminal B vises de ulike fasene i prosessen: fra frø til skulptur av plantejern.

How can plants and the knowledge of plants contribute to the restoring of damaged nature? In From Seed to Sim, artist Irene Rasmussen explores how so-called “superplants” absorb heavy metals and toxic contaminants, which contribute to the cleaning of polluted soil.

In 2021, Rasmussen established the “Sepverkhagen” in Kirkenes, just below the separation plant of the local mining company. Here, 400 “super plants” – mustard and sunflowers –  were planted in collaboration with kindergartens and volunteers. The aim was to see how much metal the plants could absorb from iron-rich industrial waste.

In the exhibition From Seed to Sim at Terminal B, the various phases of this process are shown: from the seeds themselves to a sculpture made from the iron that was absorbed by the plants.

IRENE RASMUSSEN
Irene Rasmussen bor og jobber i Tromsø, og har utdanning fra Firenze, Kabelvåg og kunstakademiet i Trondheim innen skulptur, installasjon og uterom. Rasmussen jobber med planter, vegetasjon og undersøker endringer av form og tilstander gjennom ulike stadier. Prosjektene er stedsspesifikke, temporære og forgjengelige og går over tid, der klima, natur og vekstsykluser bestemmer varigheten.

Irene Rasmussen is an artist living and working in Tromsø. She has studied in Florence, Italy, Kabelvåg, Lofoten, and the Art Academy in Trondheim within the subjects of sculpture, installation and outdoor spaces. Rasmussen works with plants and vegetation, examining changes in form and conditions through various stages. Her projects are often site-specific, temporary, and perishable over time, where climate, nature, and growth cycles determine the duration.
