Who owns the sea – and who has the right to harvest from it? Freedom of the Seas invites you into an exhibition that explores how power, capital and globalization challenge the right to the sea – a right that has long been the very basis of life for coastal communities in Norway.
Through video works, documentary conversations, photography and installation, simple but uncomfortable questions are asked: Who can actually make a living from fishing today? What does a fishing quota cost? And who actually owns the right to the resources in the sea?
Freedom of the Seas is an invitation to listen, reflect and discuss who the sea really belongs to – and what is at stake when it is made into a commodity.
Siri Hermansen
Through film, photography and installations, Siri Hermansen examines unforeseen impacts in societies that are undergoing profound economic, environmental and political change. The projects offer unusual micro-perspectives on adaptation processes and survival strategies in societies that can be considered unsafe zones. Hermansen’s artistic research method resembles a form of shared anthropology, where the artistic result depends on the relationships created on site and their subjective perspective.
Siri Hermansen has a BFA from Parsons School of Design, an MFA master from École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and she defended her doctoral project “The Economy of Survival” at KHIO in 2016.

Hvem eier havet – og hvem har rett til å høste av det? Freedom of the Seas inviterer deg inn i en utstilling som utforsker hvordan makt, kapital og globalisering utfordrer retten til havet – en rett som lenge har vært selve livsgrunnlaget for kystsamfunn i Norge.
Gjennom videoverk, dokumentariske samtaler, foto og installasjon, stilles enkle, men ubehagelige spørsmål: Hvem kan egentlig leve av fiske i dag? Hva koster en fiskekvote? Og hvem eier egentlig retten til ressursene i havet?
Freedom of the Seas er en invitasjon til å lytte, reflektere og diskutere hvem havet egentlig tilhører – og hva som står på spill når det gjøres til en vare.
Siri Hermansen
Gjennom film, fotografi og installasjoner undersøker Siri Hermansen uforutsette påvirkninger i samfunn som er i dyp økonomisk, miljømessig og politisk endring. Prosjektene tilbyr uvanlige mikroperspektiver på tilpasningsprosesser og overlevelsesstrategier i samfunn som kan betraktes som usikre soner. Hermansens kunstneriske research metode ligner en form for delt antropologi, hvor det kunstneriske resultat er avhengig av relasjoner som skapes på stedet og deres subjektive perspektiv.
