BAR International Residency Open Call 2022

Pikene på Broen are excited to launch a new open call for our BAR INTERNATIONAL residency programme in 2022/2023

NB! Deadline extended to Friday April 22nd!

Who can apply?

The residencies are designed for artists, researchers and cultural workers who wish to visit Kirkenes and the surrounding area. The programme is primarily open to residents of the Barents Regions in Norway and Russia who express a desire to initiate or continue border-crossing work, but we are open to applications from the whole Barents Region. In some cases, artists based outside of the Barents Region may be invited if their work has a strong thematic connection to the goals of Pikene på Broen.

What do the programmes offer?

  • Travel, Accommodation, and a food budget throughout the stay.
  • The opportunity to develop artistic projects, research or cultural work in the border areas around Kirkenes/ Eastern Finnmark.

Expectations from the Artist in Residence:

The expectations for the residency depend on the programme:

Introduction Residency

The introduction residency is a curated group programme that is intended to give a first impression of Kirkenes and the surrounding areas (June 8 – June 16). Guests will take part in group activities.

Project Development Programme and Artistic Research Residencies

This programme is designed for artists who wish to develop existing or potential projects in the region. Often these residencies are for those who have already visited Kirkenes before, or who have an ongoing work or practice connected in some way to the themes, communities, and geographies present in the area where Pikene på Broen is based.

Pikene has a long-term interest in the cultures of border communities and in cross-border dialogues in different forms. If high quality projects can develop during the residency stay, these projects may be able to be staged in the future as part of our platforms – Terminal B and the Barents Spektakel Festival.

The project development residency is recommended for those who:

  • Can work independently during the residency period.
  • Can present a structured and coherent work plan for the work/research stay.
  • Are willing to document the research or artistic process undertaken during the residency.
  • Are open to having dialogue with local actors, and to engage with the local communities in different ways.

Interdisciplinary Residency

This year we also encourage applications from those working outside of, or loosely connected to the field of arts. This includes practitioners with backgrounds in theatre, dance, or literature, as well as those with research backgrounds such as anthropology, sociology, architecture, biology, or geography – to name but a few.

Above all, it is important for this programme that applicants express a desire to work in an interdisciplinary way, or express an openness to collaborate with others from different fields.

Longer-term Residency Programme

This year pikene will also introduce a longer-term residency opportunity for artists from the Barents Region. The one month stay is aimed at artists with clear or established projects, and it will allow them to spend a longer time in Kirkenes or in other locations in the region to develop their work.

Digital Residency

For those who are unable to travel physically to Kirkenes, but who would like to take part in a digital residency in dialogue with Pikene på Broen.

How to apply?

The application process is as follows:

  1. Submit an online application
  2. Send a CV / artistic portfolio / list of publications in PDF format to pikenepaabroen@gmail.com before Friday April 22 2022 with ‘BAR INTERNATIONAL [Your Name]’ in the subject field.
