Hva har den finske hovedstaden Helsinki til felles med den lille nordnorske byen Kirkenes? Hvilke spørsmål dukker opp når vi reiser til lands mellom disse stedene? Hva slags historier, problemstillinger og lokalsamfunn møter vi når vi prøver knytte disse stedene sammen? Hvordan kan vi løfte disse stemmene, spesielt i storbyene?
For å løfte fram disse ideene skal Baltic Circle og Pikene på Broen starte en kunstnerisk utforskningsprosess kalt «B2B», med mål om å fremme langsomme infrastrukturer, skape nye dialoger og koble det Baltiske hav til Barentshavet gjennom en serie med forestillinger, kunstverk, kunstneriske intervensjoner, testlab-eksperimenter, et symposium og aldri så lite praktisk omsorgsarbeid.
I dagens kriser knyttet til geopolitikk, økologi og energi, mener vi at det er nødvendig med en desentrert tilnærming for å forstå de bredere spørsmålene knyttet til land, lokalsamfunn og konsekvensene som den “grønne” omstillingen vil ha utenfor byene.
Ved å begynner med å lage en forbindelse mellom Baltic Circle-festivalen i november 2022 med Pikene på Broens Barents Spektakel-festival i februar 2023, og ved å reflektere over våre respektive geografier mens vi krysser myrene, innsjøene og skogene som finnes mellom det Baltiske hav og Barentshavet. Vi skal invitere kunstnere, aktivister og forskere til å tenke med oss på hva denne reisen kan innebære og bety, finne interessante steder underveis, og introdusere tema som inviterer til en kompleks refleksjon og oppfordrer til langsiktig tenkning.

“Ved å følge vannrutene fra det baltiske hav til Barentshavet, kan vi se og føle miljøødeleggelsene som politiske vedtak i hovedstaden har forårsaket Sápmi, skogene og myrene i Finland. I dette prosjektet kan vi dele kunnskap, forme alternative narrativer, og oppfordre publikummet vårt til å delta i grasrotshandlinger som haster i krisetidene vi lever i”,

Dette er det første samarbeidet mellom Pikene på Broen og Baltic Circle.
Programmet starter under Baltic Circle i november 2022, med en test-lab og forestilling kuratert av det Murmansk-baserte kollektivet Fridaymilk. Under Barents Spektakel i februar 2023 skal utstillingsverk, kunstneriske inngrep og et «rett til reparasjon»-symposium fortsette samarbeidsprosessen.
Baltic Circle er en internasjonal festival for samtidsteater og forestillinger som arrangeres hvert år i november i Helsinki. Festivalen bringer intensitet til byen, tar stilling til aktuelle spørsmål og setter i gang samtaler. Baltic Circle tror på kunstens estetiske og affektive krefter, og på potensialet til sosial og politisk fremføring.

What does Helsinki have in common with the town of Kirkenes, situated on the north coast of Norway? What sort of questions appear when we make the journey between these two places over land? What kind of stories, issues, and communities do we encounter when trying to make these connections? And how can these voices be heard, especially in the city environment?
To address these ideas, Baltic Circle and Pikene på Broen will start an artistic research process called “B2B” that aims to promote slow infrastructures, create new dialogues, and connect the Baltic to the Barents Sea through a series of performances, artworks, artistic interventions, test-lab experiments, a symposium, and some practical care work.
In the current geopolitical, ecological, and energy crises, we believe that a de-centred approach is needed in order to understand the broader issues that relate to land, community, and the effect that the “green” transition will have outside the city.
The starting point is to connect the Baltic Circle Festival in November 2022 with Pikene’s Barents Spektakel festival in February 2023, and to think about our respective geographies as we cross the mires, lakes, and forests that stand between the Baltic and the Barents sea. We will invite artists, activists, and artistic researchers to think through what this journey can mean, to find sites of interest along the way, and to introduce themes that can invite complex reflective thought and encourage long-term thinking.

Our festivals are about the same age, and we are each facing similar issues when it comes to conversations around the energy transition, our relationships with Russia as a neighbour, and our desire to create genuine reciprocal dialogues with the people, the multispecies communities, and the land and waters that connect us. We hope that people in Helsinki will be curious enough to make this journey north in February, and that we in Kirkenes can start to think of closer connections to the Baltic coast too”,

“By following the water routes from the Baltic to the Barents Sea we can see and feel the environmental destruction that the political decisions made in the capital have caused for Sápmi and the forests and swamps in Finland. In this project we can share different knowledge, shape alternative narratives, and encourage our audience to grass-root action that is urgently needed in this time of several crises”,

This is the first collaboration between Pikene på Broen and Baltic Circle Festival.
The programme begins during Baltic Circle 2022 in November, with a test-lab and performance curated by Murmansk-based collective, Fridaymilk. During Barents Spektakel in February 2023, exhibition works, artistic interventions and a “right to repair” symposium will continue the process.
Baltic Circle is an international festival for contemporary theatre and performance organised annually in November in Helsinki. The festival brings intensities into the city, takes stands on current questions, and ignites dialogue. Baltic Circle believes in the aesthetic and affective powers of the arts, and in the potential of social and political agency of performance.
