Artist Eva Bakkeslett in Kirkenes

kvenkakeEva Bakkeslett has just been here to do research for an art project she will produce for Barents Spektakel 2012. The artists´ main focus is on environmental issues and traditional skills, such as crafts and bread baking.

Under the residence Eva visited Tuomainen farm in Vadsø, an old Kven farm now owned by the Varanger Museum, and met Tove Kristiansen, who told her about the Kven people, the local history, and the local food and bread making traditions.
In Pasvik the artist visited Venke Tørmænen to learn about Skolt Sami crafts and culture, Svanhovd Environmental Centre and Ivar Øverli, a local cheese maker.
Then the artist took a one-day trip to Russian town Nikel, where she met Nelly Makeva, a local craftsperson.

Eva Bakkeslett will be back in Kirkenes in February to finish her project and present it at the Barents Spektakel 2012.
