Utstillingen består av en serie fotografier fra Morten Torgersruds umiddelbare omgivelser i Kirkenes sammen med et utvalg fotografier av Ellisif Wessel fra perioden 1890-1920. Dokumentasjon av infrastruktur og industri flettes sammen med bilder fra kunstnerens familiealbum. Materialet sidestilles med kunstnernes egne fotografiske verk og sammenstillingen utløser en vekselvirkning mellom bildene som setter dem i spill. Overfloden av bilder skaper nye spontane og tilsynelatende tilfeldige forbindelser som overskrider tradisjonelle inndelinger og kategorisering.
Som selvlært fotograf dokumenterte den revolusjonære kommunistiske overklassekvinnen Ellisif Wessel det flerkulturelle livet på grensen mot Russland, midt i industrialiseringens fremtog. Når Morten Torgersrud innlemmer Wessels landskapsfotografi side om side med funnet materiale og egne bilder, er det som om de flytende overgangene mellom familiealbum, arkivmateriale og de to fotografenes søkere skaper et nytt og overordnet motiv. Wessels fotografier av fossefall, elver, trær, iskanter, kystlinjer og fjellformasjoner er tatt i en periode hvor industrialiseringen for alvor skjøt fart og definerte et grenseområde som har vært preget av kontinuerlig forhandling og forflytning.
Torgersruds fotografier skaper, sammen med det fotografiske materialet han benytter, et bevegelig rom for en assosiativ og improvisert meningsutveksling som spenner fra formale undersøkelser av vann, lys og infrastruktur til fotografiets materialitet og forhold til kunnskapsproduksjon.
Morten Torgersrud bor og arbeider i Kirkenes. Han har studert fotografi ved University of Brighton og Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen. Torgersrud arbeider med utgangspunkt i sine umiddelbare omgivelser i Kirkenes og den lokale fotohistorien fra området. Torgersrud har blant annet stilt ut ved Hordaland kunstnersenter, Galleri Hippolyte i Helsinki, Murmansk Oblast museum, Samisk kunstnersenter i Karasjok, Treignac projet i Frankrike, Nordnorsk kunstsenter, Preus museum og Kunstnerforbundet. Av gruppeutstillinger kan nevnes Konstmuseet i Norr, Kiruna; Lillehammer kunstmuseum, Fotogalleriet, Oslo og Konstnärhuset, Stockholm. I 2011 ble han tildelt BKHs fotokunstpris for tekst- og lysbildeverket ‘Circulating sites’ som ble vist på Vårutstillingen ved Fotogalleriet i Oslo. Torgersrud har gitt ut seks bøker og er innkjøpt av Nordnorsk kunstmuseum, Preus museum, KORO, og er representert i De samiske samlinger i Karasjok.

The exhibition consists of a series of photographs from Morten Torgersrud’s immediate surroundings in Kirkenes together with a selection of photographs by Ellisif Wessel from the period 1890-1920. Documentation of infrastructure and industry is intertwined with images from the artist’s family album. The material is juxtaposed with the artists’ own photographic works, and the juxtaposition triggers an interaction between the images that puts them into play. The abundance of images creates new spontaneous and seemingly random connections that transcend traditional divisions and categorization.
As a self-taught photographer, the revolutionary communist upper-class woman Ellisif Wessel documented multicultural life on the border with Russia, in the midst of the rise of industrialization. When Morten Torgersrud incorporates Wessel’s landscape photography side by side with found material and his own images, it is as if the fluid transitions between family albums, archival material and the two photographers’ viewfinders create a new and overarching motif. Wessel’s photographs of waterfalls, rivers, trees, ice edges, coastlines and mountain formations were taken during a period when industrialization was really gaining momentum and defined a border area that has been characterized by continuous negotiation and displacement.
Torgersrud’s photographs create, together with the photographic material he uses, a moving space for an associative and improvised exchange of ideas that ranges from formal investigations of water, light and infrastructure to the materiality of photography and its relationship to knowledge production.
Morten Torgersrud lives and works in Kirkenes. He has studied photography at the University of Brighton and the Bergen Academy of Fine Arts. Torgersrud works based on his immediate surroundings in Kirkenes and the local photographic history from the area. Torgersrud has exhibited at, among others, the Hordaland Art Center, Galleri Hippolyte in Helsinki, Murmansk Oblast Museum, Sami Art Center in Karasjok, Treignac projet in France, Nordnorsk Art Center, Preus Museum and the Artists’ Association. Group exhibitions include the Art Museum in Norr, Kiruna; Lillehammer Art Museum, Fotogalleriet, Oslo and Konstnärhuset, Stockholm. In 2011 he was awarded the BKH Photo Art Prize for the text and slide work ‘Circulating sites’ which was shown at the Spring Exhibition at the Fotogalleriet in Oslo. Torgersrud has published six books and has been purchased by the Nordnorsk Art Museum, Preus Museum, KORO, and is represented in the Sami Collections in Karasjok.
