As most of us negotiate new, everyday ways of being in the world and attempt to adapt to ongoing restrictions, the 17th edition of Barents Spektakel will also experiment with how to keep going despite the present challenges.
The Sør-Varanger region has remained relatively free from the virus throughout 2020, and we would like to keep it that way. As organisers, we continue to follow all of the advice and recommendations against the spread of the virus, on both the national level and the municipality level.
The festival’s form will therefore closely connect to its theme ‘The Essentials’, as we stitch together events for local audiences in Kirkenes, Murmansk, Nikel and Arkhangelsk and connect them to the wider digital community. The goal is to maintain important cross-border relationships whilst finding new, alternative ways of working together and staying connected.
In place of our usual large-scale opening show, this year we will focus on smaller events across several sites; many will be stationed outdoors as a measure to avoid large crowds gathering. For the local audience, we aim to provide safe ways of experiencing the festival in person. For those outside these regions, we encourage digital participation as the primary way of experiencing the festival this year.
Stay tuned for updates on the festival projects, exhibitions and artist announcements in the days and weeks to come!
