Long Live Sjømannsklubben

All good things come to an end and today we say goodbye to the iconic Seaman’s Club / Sjømannsklubben / Клуб моряков on Kirkenes’ industrial quay. The Kirkenes landmark, that in its heyday welcomed sailors from all over the world, will soon be torn down to make way for further development of the Kirkenes harbour side.

Since closing as a Seaman’s club, Pikene på Broen has taken over the space for pop-up exhibitions and performances, breathing new life into the building.

Before the iconic structure is lost forever, Pikene på Broen liberated the large white letters from the blue wooden façade, ensuring that the memory and history of the building will be in some way preserved. The roughly cut wooden letters have been an iconic symbol of Kirkenes, welcoming weary Russian sailors to port after long months at sea and providing an exotic arctic background for countless tourist photographs.

Thanks to everyone who came to our exhibitions openings and performances over the years, thanks to Sør-Varanger kommune who always approved our requests to occupy the space and thanks to the artists who we worked with inside this unique backdrop.

Long live Sjømannsklubben!
