DMZ Academy: Modern Art Enters North Korea

Pikene på Broen’s artistic director Luba Kuzovnikova will this week travel to North Korea to take part in the DMZ Academy with Headmaster Morten Traavik.

The DMZ Academy presents the first-ever contemporary arts symposium and workshop in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), August 26 – September 4, 2017.

7 international contemporary artists and curators from Austria, Barents Region, China, France, Germany, Norway and United Kingdom will join (North) Korean colleagues from the country’s two highest institutions of art production: Pyongyang University of Fine Arts and Mansudae Art Studios. The results of 10 days of work demonstrations, artist talks, literal culture clashes, central planning and on-the-spot inspiration will be developed into the international touring joint exhibition THE ART FACTORY, scheduled for 2018.

Academy Headmaster Morten Traavik will present the first public preview of THE ART FACTORY  during the CosMoscow International Art Fair, September 8-10, 2017.

The documentary film THE WAR OF ART, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Gulliksen and produced by Norsk Fjernsyn (N) and StoryHouse (DE/US), follows the project from concept to execution and is scheduled for international premiere in 2018. Three years in the planning, THE ART FACTORY and the DMZ Academy is organised and curated by Traavik.Info in collaboration with the D P R Korea Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries. The project is supported by Arts Council Norway (NO) and Prince Claus Fund (NL).
