Since 2008 the French duo, Magali & Cédric, has been on several artistic expeditions in the Arctic, and were inspired by the Arctic landscape and environmental matters, indigenous language and culture. When MagalI &Cédric visited Svalbard, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and the intention of preserving a wide variety of plant seeds in an underground cavern fascinated them. However, they never entered the vault. Something was to be left for the imagination. Afterwards Magali & Cédric worked associatively with a professional nose from the German fragrance house, drom fragrance. The nose – her name is Aleksandra – was given thoughts, ideas, emotions and associations and developed the smell of theArctic in cooperation with Magali & Cédric. BECOMINGSEED is an abstract art piece that affects both body and mind. The frangrance itself isfresh, cool and ionized; it said to be almost frozen, like the smell of opening a freezer. Magali & Cédric has done similar fragrance projects earlier and describes BECOMING SEED as a contemporary allusion to the French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s, A Thousand Plateaus, which confronts Freudian psychoanalysis.
The project was presented at the festival exhibition Ticking Barents under Barents Spektakel 2013.
